Radio Data System, or RDS, is a communications protocol standard for embedding small amounts of diqital information in conventional in conventional FM radio broadcasts. RDS standardises several types of information transmitted, including time, station indentificationand programme information.

In fact, RDS is not so simple as you think. The radio we are listening have two main means of transmission, commonly called FM and AM. The sound quality of FM is better, and it is stereo, but it has a fatal weakness is that the transmission distance is too short. However, this is the AM's strengths. Of course, it is not a big problem when we usually fixed at a certain place, but if we move, we may not be able to get it, or the transmitting frequency has changed.

How to do it? Is there any way to combined with the advantages of FM and AM? Europeans are so smart on the development of the RDS radio system. With the AF function, if the radio signal level is good when you're listening, it will not move, when the signal below a certain level, AF function will search the current station automatically to find another signal, when the AF have found one that is better and more stable than the original frequency, it will jump in automatically (of course, the program is still the same.)

RDS radio system also has another powerful feature: TA function, as the explanation on the Internet, RDS can emission the station name, program type, program content to the radio screen. In fact, RDS radios also can classify sub-station program type automatically. Generally, the car stereo RDS radio, can store about 30 categories of programs: such as news, sports, entertainment and more.

In addition, in order to ensure the safety car trip, RDS radio has a unique "traffic information" function. If there have some important traffic information, such as road traffic congestion, accident, landslides, the radio will send special traffic information, and your RDS radio will turn on "TP" lights, regardless of your stereo is doing, it will be forced to suspend all action, and then insert the broadcast traffic information. (Though it sound a bit brutal, but you can cancel it after you heard it)
